Visit to the Architecturally and culturally significant places of Chandigarh ,Dharamshala and Amritsar

Objective:

The architecture study tour encompassed three distinct cities in the northern region of India: Chandigarh, Amritsar, and Dharamshala. Each city presented a unique blend of historical, cultural, and contemporary architectural marvels, offering invaluable insights into the evolution of architecture in the Indian context.

Brief :

● Day 1: Boarded train from Pune Station to CST. Mumbai and Boarded train to Ambala Junction from CST, at Midnight.

● Day 2 :Whole day train Journey

● Day 3 : Arrived at Ambala Junction and proceeded to Chandigarh.Train delayed by 4 hours Arrive at by 330 pm at hotel at Chandigarh: Left for sightseeing after Lunch at HotelDesigned by the renowned architect Le Corbusier, Chandigarh stands as a testament to modern urban planning principles. The city's architecture reflects a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics, characterized by clean lines, geometric shapes, and spacious greenery. The tour included visits to iconic landmarks such as Le Corbusier Museum and Sukhna Lake where students gained a deeper understanding of Le Corbusier's vision for an ideal city. Additionally, explorations of Sector 17, designed as the commercial hub, crafted entirely from industrial and urban waste materials, provided fascinating insights into Chandigarh's architectural diversity and sustainability initiatives.

● Day 4: Leave for Dharmshala, enroute visit to Virasat-E-Khalsa: an architectural Marvel , a landmark museum that commemorated the 550 year journey of thriving culture, heritage and tradition of Punjab and Sikhism.Students gained knowledge about the history and culture as well as the unique architectural style of world renowned architect, Moshe Safdie who has designed the structure.
Opened to the public in 2011, the museum's architecture itself is a sight to behold, blending modern design with traditional Sikh motifs. Its sprawling structure spreads over 6,500 square meters and houses a treasure trove of artifacts, artworks, and multimedia exhibits that narrate the story of Sikhism from its inception to the present day.
Visitors embark on a journey through time, starting with the life and teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, and progressing through the lives of subsequent Sikh Gurus. The exhibits vividly portray pivotal moments in Sikh history, including the battles fought for righteousness and the sacrifices made by Sikh martyrs.
One of the highlights of the museum is the Panorama Hall, where a panoramic painting brings to life the historic Battle of Anandpur Sahib, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the intensity and drama of the event. Additionally, the museum boasts a vast collection of artifacts such as weapons, manuscripts, and religious relics, offering a glimpse into the material culture of Sikhism. Arrived at Dharmashala hotel by evening, post late lunch, a quick walk to the market.

● Day 5 :
Dharamshala:Nestled amidst the serene Himalayan foothills, Dharamshala provided a stark contrast to the urban landscapes of Chandigarh. The tour started with exploration of a distinctive architectural styles of Tibetan Buddhism, evident in the monasteries and temples dotting the himalayan landscape.Students visited Norbulingka Monastery offered insights into the preservation of Tibetan art and architecture in exile, highlighting Dharamshala's significance as a cultural and spiritual haven., St. John Church, Dalai lama temple the residence of the Dalai Lama and the largest Tibetan temple outside Tibet, marveling at its intricate Tibetan architecture and serene ambiance.They also visited the Tibet museum, Naddi view point and Mcleodganj . Free time was given to students for shopping in the local market

● Day 6 : The group left for Amritsar after breakfast .After check in at the hotel and lunch, immediately proceeded to Atari- Wagah Border for the “beating the retreat “ ceremony. This is the international border between India and Pakistan. The pomp and pageantry of the Beating Retreat and the Change of Guard within handshaking distance of the Indian and Pakistani forces makes for a most charming spectacle. Wagah, an army outpost on Indo-Pak border – between Amritsar and Lahore, is an elaborate complex of buildings, roads and barriers on both sides. The daily highlight is the evening “Beating the Retreat” ceremony. Soldiers from both countries march in perfect drill, going through the steps of bringing down their respective national flags. As the sun goes down, nationalistic fervor rises and lights are switched on marking the end of the day amidst thunderous applause.
A memorable day filled with highest patriotic feelings were experienced by all after witnessing the ceremony

● Day 7:
Local sightseeing at Amritsar: Amritsar, the spiritual and cultural hub of Punjab, offered a rich tapestry of architectural wonders deeply rooted in Sikh history and tradition. The highlight of the tour was the magnificent Golden Temple, a sacred pilgrimage site renowned for its stunning marble and gold architecture. Students also visited the historic Jallianwala Bagh, witnessing the somber memorial to the tragic massacre of 1919, and explored the intricate design and symbolism of traditional Sikh architecture at the Akal Takht. Additionally, the tour included a visit to the Gobindgarh Fort, located in Amritsar, Punjab, India, is a historic monument with significant architectural and cultural importance. Originally built in the 18th century by the Sikh ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh, it served as a strategic military fort to safeguard the city from external threats. Architecturally, Gobindgarh Fort showcases a blend of Mughal and Sikh architectural styles. The fort is characterized by its robust sandstone walls, bastions, and imposing gateways. The design reflects both defensive considerations and aesthetic sensibilities of the time. The fort's layout comprises various structures such as the Darbar Hall, Hawa Mahal, Toshakhana, and various barracks and armories. Each structure offers insights into the military and administrative functions of the fort during its heyday.glimpses of a historic administrative and military fort located in the center of the city.

● Day 8, 9 & 10: The tour ended with a return journey from Amritsar railway station to Pune, Via Mumbai. It started at 9 am departure on Day 8 and 9: 30 am arrival at Pune/Lonavala on Day 10 . It was an almost 48 hour train trip.

Subject: RMC PLANT SITE VISIT AT PUNAWALE, PUNE

Name of the Project: Pune Ville by M/S Pharande Developers

RMC plant site visit was organized for the students of S.Y.B.Arch(2017-18) Section A/B, at Pune Ville Residential Project.

The Developers first explained the entire project phase wise with the help of a physical model available at site office. Later the students were taken to the RMC plants were they were introduced to the various equipments, software's and systems, used in the entire procedure for preparing the Cement concrete. A half cubic meter of concrete mix was prepared for students which enable them to understand the entire process, which was later followed with the compression and workability tests at the labs, with the help of sample concrete blocks and fresh concrete.
The intention of the above site visit was to make students understand the procedure, quantity and quality maintained for the various concrete mix produced at the RMC Plant.

Subject:Settlement Study with respect to Design and other subjects.

OBJECTIVE :

1. Study how a settlement starts and develops.

2. Understand the Housing Typology and construction details of the structures.

3. Measuring and documenting the Load bearing Houses and other Historical structures.

BRIEF OF THE EVENT:

The settlement inside the Panhala Fort was taken for the studies. Areas were identified for study and the students were divided into groups and tasks were assigned to them regarding the topics, methodology and extent to which they needed to observe, study and document.

They measured the chosen houses and structures, documented the materials used for construction, interacted with the people living there to find out its History, and uses of the heritage structures, prepared a land-use plan of the areas chosen, documented the plumbing, water and sewage system prevalent, vegetation of the area, occupation, transport facilities, observed the roofing system and the various materials used in their construction, Door, window materials, joinery details, and other matter related to their subjects and syllabus.

They sketched the various houses and Monuments and other structures as a part of their studies.

The students visited all the monuments and structures of Importance within the Fort and observed the construction, materials and other details.

A visit to the Canteen of Sanjay Ghodawat College made them aware of what defines a “Green Building” and the difference it makes to the environment and the Ambience. Other places visited were Jahaj Temple, Mahalaxmi Temple, where they got to see ancient as well as Fusion Architecture.

Subject: Design-II

The students visited Alibaug and two villages nearby namely- Bamnoli and Varsoli koliwada.

Aim - To study the traditional architecture, the built and open spaces with reference to the activities taking place in those places.
Study of the building technology and the local materials used for construction.
Students had to prepare drawings based on their study and also design a structure in the climate of the region. This will help them understand how to respond to different climatic conditions.
A site is selected and design of a primary health centre has been proposed as there is lack of primary health services.

Subject: Building technology & Materials Visit to College of Military Engineering

A site visit was scheduled for the first year students under the subject ''Building technology and materials''. This visit was scheduled on 15th March 2017. The visit was organized by Ar.Nazneen Ahmed and accompanied the subject faculty, Prof.Avani Topkar, Prof.Rachna Bhosle, Prof.Prajakta Thamke andProf. Roshni Yettiwar.

During the visit the students got to see the model building for demonstration of various building materials their application and types of doors and windows. Professor from the college of military engineering gave students a brief introduction about the model room and demonstration building.

Wai: One day Tour

A Study Tour is a course combined with a short-term period of group travel designed to introduce you to other countries or cities & cultures by bringing to life what you are learning in the classroom. Hence, inclusion of Study tour in our academic curriculum plays a crucial role providing an opportunity to students to execute and enhancing their skills, knowledge and competencies with self-development and actualization to be a professional in future.

A one day tour to Wai and Menawali was organized for first year students along with faculties on 1st October 2016. Students visited Menawali a village in Wai which has a history of Nana Fadnis wada and the ghats constructed by Nana Phadnis. It was his retirement abode. A brief history was narrated to the students about Wai and Menawali. On the way back they had a treat to visit Mapro garden where students enjoyed sweets and shopping.

A site visit for the study of various materials and tools and building elements was organized for the students of first Year Bachelor of Architecture of our College to the above site, as per their Academic curriculum.

2. What are the various elements of building Students learned the technique and mechanism of mixers. Students were allowed to take photographs and sample materials for future reference.

STUDY TOUR AT JAIPUR, UDAIPUR, CHITTPRGARH & MOUNT ABU

Class: Second Year Section A & B

Objectives of study tour & settlement study: - Study of a Settlement of a semi urban type/ community in an urban location and the analysis and documentation w.r.t. lifestyle of occupants, climatic and topographical response, semipublic built and open spaces, and associated architectural character as a part of fourth semester Design syllabus.

Methodology: Students are supposed to do the settlement study and analysis of the selected area near Badi chaupad, Jaipur. It was initiated in two parts

  • Pre - work before visiting the settlement and
  • At site work during study tour and
  • Post work after visit.

Also it is more important as a student of architecture to study the wide spectrum of the climate, lifestyle, culture and architecture of the rich settlement of Mewar & Marwar. The Havelis, Forts, Temples and other Monuments not only add the sense of the architectural vocabulary but also the sensitivity towards historical influence of our country.

Students have analyzed well the diversity in the settlement pattern, climate and topographical features of the places they have visited in study tour and also they have tried to cope themselves for contextual planning and architectural style.

Subject: Building Technology & Materials-IV

VISIT TO RCC SLAB AND STAIRCASE CONSTRUCTION SITE
near Sambhaji Nagar, Nigdi, Pradhikaran, Pune

Class: Second Yr Section A

  • The objective of the visit to show the construction methodology for RCC slab and staircase
  • To make students familiar with reinforcement, additives and concrete standards in RCC

The visit was scheduled on 13th January 2017 after first half of College. Students had their own means of transport as the site was not more than 2 KM from college. It was mandatory for the students to wear uniform, identity cards and shoes. The total numbers of students present were 37 accompanied by 2 faculties.(Prof. Priyanka, Prof. Gurudeep). All the students left the college at 1.00 pm and reached the site by 1.25 pm.

Mr. Ram Manukot (site engineer) accompanied us on the site tour. The students were given a common introduction about RCC Construction and the different materials used in concrete. The casting of RCC slab for first floor was on site and students saw the method of filling a slab with on site material mixing. students learned about formwork, falsework, scaffolding, concrete additives. Students also calculated the labour requirement and understood the reinforcement detailing.

Mr.Ram again cleared the doubt of students and a small question answer session was conducted. His friendliness and assertiveness was very motivational and student showed interest in coming back. Student Nikhil made a vote of thanks and ended the site visit with a group photo.Student were again escorted back to the college and a sketching and report writing exercise was taken till day end of college.

VISIT TO SHIRKE CONSTRUCTION RMC PLANT, PIMPE WAGHERE, PUNE.

The visit was arranged on 28th June 2016 for the students of Second year Studio A of S.B.P.C.O.A.D.

  • The objective of the visit to show the working of a RMC plant.
  • To make students familiar to different components of concrete

The visit was scheduled on 28th June 2016 after first half of College. Bus transport was arranged for the student from college to the site. It was mandatory for the students to wear uniform, identity cards and shoes. Helmets for the visit were to be provided by the Site executive. the total numbers of students present were 37 accompanied by 3 faculties.(Prof. Priyanka, Prof. Gurudeep, Prof. Niharika). The bus left the college right on decided time at 1.30pm and reached the destination at 1.55 pm.

Mr. Shrikant Tambaku (site engineer) accompanied us on the site tour. the students were given a common introduction about RMC plant and the different materials used in concrete. Due to inadequate construction site helmets batch of 20 students were taken at a time accompanied by faculty for the site tour. the student saw the store room of materials, the RMC plant and its functioning from monitor room. Fresh batch of concrete was prepared in front of the students as demonstration.

Detail explanation of admixtures, its quality and uses were explained. The time and distance for the RMC concrete to be used on site was explained. students understood the technique and mechanism of mixers. Students were allowed to take photographs for future reference. some students also took some material for sample.

Mr. Shrikant again cleared the doubt of students and a quick question answer session was conducted. He even invited student to visit the site again once the foundation and precast work starts. His friendliness and assertiveness was very motivational and student showed interest in coming back. Student Anushka presented a vote of thanks and ended the site visit with a group photo.

A site visit for Measure drawing was organized for the students of Second Year Bachelor of Architecture (Section-B) of our College to the above site, as per their Academic curriculum for the Subject History Of Architecture- III, for the topic - Measure Drawing of Historic Structure.

The above historic structure is located at Katraj area of Pune, where students went for studying and measuring the structure in detail. The head of the temple gave all the information regarding the history of the structure, including the scale of project as well as the Design of the temple.

Subject: Site Visit: Natural Living Furniture Showroom, Baner, Pune

Objectives: - 1. To make students familiar to different types of timber furniture and joineries that can be used while designing furniture such as bed, wardrobe, study table, chair and dining table etc.

Outcome: - Students made sketches of different types of furniture in display and became familiar with timber furniture and its joineries. Students clarified their doubts with the professors and got a clear understanding regarding furniture design to be handelled as a part of their curriculam.

STUDY TOUR AT AHMEDABAD, GUJARAT

Objectives of study tour:Study of campus design with reference to design development of existing campus to understand the integrating functions/spaces, structure and services in building, choice of structural system with respect to surrounding and climatic context as a part of fourth semester Design syllabus.

Students need to do the relevant case studies with respect to the given design problem and document the analysis regarding location and site plan, space requirements and allocation of spaces, Bye-laws, Commercial aspects and services. Interrelationship between spaces and with surroundings, climate considerations, crowd management and multifunctional - flexible spaces are the key features of the study.

Students have analyzed well the diversity in the campus planning, climate and climate responsive features of the structures that they have visited in study tour and also they have tried to cope themselves for own design problem.

The visit was arranged on 16th November 2016 for the students of Third year of S.B.P.C.O.A.D.
1. The objective of the visit to show the working of Sliding folding doors and various hardware.
2. To make students familiar to different hardware fittings and its application in design.

The visit was scheduled on 16th November 2016 after first half of College. Students asked to visit directly to display center during specific timings. Students have visited in batch of 20 students. The total numbers of students present were 60 accompanied by 3 faculties. (Prof. Nazneen Ahmed, Prof. Ajay Harale & Prof. Swapnil Kuldharan).
